At Pusch Ridge, we believe that all people are made in the image of our Creator
God, and therefore it is glorifying to Him to encourage students in the arts.
The arts program comprises the Visual Arts, Music, Theater Arts, as well as the
dance program within theater arts. Together, these programs encourage creative
thinking, self-expression, originality, emotional release, questioning, problem
solving, and a richer appreciation of the world, past and present.
VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT
Students learn the elements and principles of design: line, color, pattern,
texture, value, shape, movement, contrast, and repetition through a wide variety
of media, slides, films, videos, books, and prints. This helps students to
develop a critical and historical appreciation of art. All courses in the arts
address the five components required by the University of Arizona: artistic
perception, creative expression, historical and cultural content, aesthetic
valuing, and connections and applications. All require some work beyond class
time.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
The Music Department believes that the study of music helps to enrich us. Our
goal is to allow all students the opportunity to experience music in many
different aspects, so that music becomes a lifelong experience. The program
provides opportunities to experience both singing and playing through the band
and choral programs. Introductory levels are provided in both, with auditions
required for the advanced levels. All classes do some performance, although the
Advanced classes have significantly more. The Band programs includes Marching
Band during football season and concert band for the remainder of the school
year.
THEATER ARTS DEPARTMENT
The curriculum is designed to serve as an introduction to the principles of
speech and drama. Students learn effective skills in public speaking, oral
interpretation, critical analysis, acting, and play production. Students also
learn the history of drama as an art form, including the various types of drama
and the major figures. The Advanced drama class performs 2 major works each
year.
PERFORMANCE DANCE
The curriculum is designed to educate students in both the physical and
aesthetic elements of dance, as well as the understanding of dance as a
performing art. Students are informed as to the evolution of dance as an art
form integral to the development of civilization as both an influence upon
society and a reflection of culture. Students are instructed in techniques of
classical and modern dance. The course trains students in advanced technique and
performance of modern and jazz dance. It offers students performance
opportunities, instructs them in choreography, and requires their participation
in a service learning experience through an arts community outreach project.
